Respond/React/Adapt is an MA project which seeks to redefine the perception of textiles by exploring material behaviour through surface manipulation techniques to create multi-functional textiles that can be responsive to changing environments in fashion, interiors and architecture.
Inspiration is originated by how the surface of the built environment is affected by contributing elements such as light, opacity, cloud and transparency. Fabrics are inspired by the the reflective and repetitive patterning qualities of modern building structures to inform the surface and function of designs that engage with new paradigms.
Digital processes and smart technologies are integrated into semi-flexible soft industrial materials that promote cross-collaboration through the merging of processes such as printing,vacuum-forming, laminating, stitching and by applying circuitry, to develop new behavioural qualities. The textiles also exhibit diverse ‘personalities’, designed to stimulate and create sensory environments that engage with and promote human interaction.
